My 1.2 Trillion Milligram Magnesium BAILOUT Plan

Carolyn Dean MD ND | Friday, February 13, 2009
President Obama talking with medical doctors.
How much money would America save in health care costs by investing in as little as 400 mg of magnesium a day?

“What’s the big deal with magnesium?” asked my driver last Friday. He was overweight with a 2-litre bottle of diet Coca-Cola at his side.

I had been flown into Miami to talk about the importance of magnesium on The Women’s Show.

I filled my driver in on how magnesium helps regulate and relax every organ in the body.

By the end of the ride he’d given me his “history:” He suffered from leg cramps, rising cholesterol and high blood pressure. His blood sugars were also creeping toward diabetic-land.

“Try these,” I said handing him some samples of Natural Calm’s “just-add-water” magnesium drink. Not the kind of tip he was expecting – but that’s what you get when you’re chauffeuring the Magnesium Queen.

From Formaldehyde to Magnesium…

“Try replacing,” I suggested, “your formaldehyde (AKA aspartame) sweetened Coca-cola with a bottle of this stevia sweetened magnesium drink. The switch will help you with your headaches and blurry vision, too.”

“Thanks!” he said. “But I’m going to give these to my wife. She’s pregnant and wakes up screaming at night with horrible leg cramps.”

And that’s how the rest of the day went…

At the studio the make-up artist wanted to know if the magnesium would help her daughter’s constipation. Of course! The host asked if it would help her deal with her migraines. You bet! The guys on the floor, with “restless leg syndrome,” were even interested.

I Called my Book the Magnesium Miracle.
But the REAL Miracle is…

…that modern man gets by as well as he does with so little of this essential nutrient. A hundred years ago — before we depleted our soil with greedy agricultural practices — the average person received at least 500 mg of magnesium a day, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Without supplementation, in 2009, even on a pure organic diet, you’re looking at only 150 mg at best. Those on a pure McDonald’s diet may be lucky to get 50 mg. And we may need between 600 and 900 mg… per day!

Most countries are in great need of a “Magnesium Bailout.” Especially if you want to cut back on future health care costs. Let’s look at the United States…

300 million people x 400 mg of magnesium per day
= 1.2 trillion mg of magnesium

Yes, a 1.2 Trillion Milligram Magnesium Health Stimulus Plan! Anyone have President Obama’s email address handy? Feel free to send him this blog post!

  2. Hello! I have found Dr. Dean’s books to be very informative. I am 45 years old and I have been suffering from terrible migranes and digestive issues for over six years. I am very lean, work out regularly, and do not eat junk food. I have been using magnesium oil per your recommendation for several months. I have not noticed an improvement in my migranes and/or digestive issues
as of yet. Might you have any additional suggestions? Thank you so much for this wonderful newsletter.

  8. Hello Ann,
I can’t “prescribe” for you but, in general, the dosage of the magnesium oil can be up to 2 tsp per day. When the mag oil doesn’t seem to be helping, the next step is angstrom magnesium. It’s the right size for immediate absorption at the cell level and it doesn’t cause a laxative effect. It can be obtained at 123minerals.com and the company site is http://www.completeh2ominerals.com. Papers about angstrom minerals can be found at a veterinarian’s site http://www.terrywooddvm.com.
    Hope this information helps.

I have this bladder infection since I was a little girl, I never found any doctor that could help me and I have been taking antibiotics all this time, I saw another day a show about your book, but was the end so I could see all about it, and I am not able to pay for your consult not right now, but can you tell me if is Yeast?candida?
I really would appreciate it if you can help me or give some info.

    Thank you!!

  12. Hi Helen,
Thank you for your question. Perhaps if your doctors tested your urine for yeast they might find that it is causing some or most of your symptoms. Long-term use of antibiotics produces antibiotic resistance and yeast overgrowth. Antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria leaving room for yeast to overgrow. You can go to the site http://www.yeastconnection.com to find accurate information on yeast overgrowth including treatments. On my site, you can find an article I wrote on yeast and inflammation that explains why yeast overgrowth is so common, yet overlooked by most doctors.

  18. Hi Dr. Dean– Bought your book and have started on the Natural Calm Magnesium drink this past week. I am also taking a prescription for Pristiq, for anxiety. Is it safe to be taking the Magnesium with the Pristiq since both are supposed to produce serotonin. I’d love to stop taking the Pristiq, but as you know you cant suddenly stop taking it. Thanks.

  19. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD ND commented on February 21st, 2009 at 10:47 pm...
  20. Hello Allan,
Magnesium does help in the production of serotonin only when it is needed, working on a feedback mechanism.
SSRI drugs kill the enzyme that breaks down serotonin, allowing it to build up…and sometimes too much.
If an SSRI drug causes an elevation of serotonin, magnesium won’t make more because of the feedback loop.
Magnesium does MANY other things that help the adrenals, nervous system, muscle relaxation and is very beneficial for someone with anxiety…on or off drugs.

  22. I appreciate your newsletter very much – thank you!

Question about the magnesium oil: the only place I can spray it where it doesn’t sting more than I can stand is on the bottoms of my feet but when I do this I break out in an itchy rash all over my upper legs and abdomen. Even when I dilute the oil several times, I get this response. It calms down after several hours but I’m wondering if I should I be concerned about this or is this “normal” for someone who is apparently very (based on what I’ve read in your book and in other sources) magnesium deficient?

(Thanks, too, for being open to questions!)

  23. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD ND commented on February 23rd, 2009 at 10:21 pm...
  24. Hi Rhonda,
Thanks for your question. I know the mag oil can sting and it’s hard to say if you have very sensitive skin or you are having a reaction to the oil–especially since you dilute it so much and you still have symptoms.
To get your magnesium, you may have to switch to angstrom magnesium at http://www.123minerals.com. The company site is http://www.completeh2ominerals.com and a veterinarian friend, Dr. Terry Wood (www.terrywooddvm.com) has a website with some very good research and articles about his use of the minerals.
I discovered this form of magnesium after I wrote the second edition to The Magnesium Miracle. So, I thank you for your question so I can share this information.

    Dear SA,
The type of magnesium you need is found at http://www.123minerals.com. The magnesium and other minerals on that site are angstrom-sized, which means they are absorbed at the cellular level. This type of magnesium does not go through the intestines and cause a laxative effect.
See more information about this type of mineral at http://www.completeh2ominerals.com and Research from a Veterinarian who uses Complete H2O Minerals. http://www.terrywooddvm.com
    I hope this helps.

  28. You might have helped the cab driver more by trying to get him off the aspartame loaded pop which has crippled me since 1991. It only took 3 months to make my legs virtually useless and change my DNA so that I grew a pair of 44EE breasts.
See my website (htp://aspartame.ca) started in August 1995 when I finally found out what was wrong with me from an FDA freedom of information release. Even my doctor (fired as a result of the FDA release) had a jar of Equal (aspartame) on his coffee table.
Pity youre not still here in freezing Canada. I’m in Toronto. Right now -17C

  30. Hello John,
    Thanks for your comment.
In future blogs, I’ll be talking about aspartame and you can be sure I read my driver the riot act on this neurotoxic poison.
I’ve also “saved lives” on the phone with various tech support people. I always ask them what they are drinking and they invariably say DIET, so I tell them it’s made of methanol and two neurotoxic amino acids and breaks down into formaldehyde.
I’ve written about aspartame in most of my books but especially Death by Modern Medicine which is now updated and available as an eBook through my site.

I recently read your book “The Magnesium Miracle” and have began implimenting magnesium oil supplimentation. Huge change! I feel great, my energy levels are much higher and I have an overall feeling of well being. Thank you. Just had a quick question though. Would magnesium chloride (in powder form) absorb in the skin the same way magnesium oil does? Just trying to think of creative ways to give magnesium to the kiddo. Maybe i’ll add it to the baby powder. Thank you again.

  34. Hello Justin,
Thanks for your comments. I love hearing stories about the wonders of magnesium!
For children, you can put the oil in a bath and it absorbs beautifully through the skin.
The powder would have to be diluted in water to absorb, so you could put that in a bath as well.
The hot water dissolves the powder and makes it available for absorption.
There is also a “Baby Calm” magnesium citrate powder for children that can be taken by mouth.
    It is sweetened with Stevia.

  36. Hi Dr. Dean,
I am very greatful for your book which I learned about through a chiropractor friend. I have been using ionic magnesium from a company you recommended but I only get 15mg. from 2 dropperfuls. I am taking a calcium magnesium liquid that gives me 1200 of cal. and 600 mag. I know my adrenals are exhausted and I definitely have syndrom x. What do you suggest for increasing the magnesium and how long will it take to notice a difference? I also purchased the oil. So I use that more than once a day?

  37. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD ND commented on March 17th, 2009 at 2:04 pm...
  38. Hello Carol,
I love the fact that so many people are being helped by that book! If it’s an angstrom mineral which is 100% absorbed, then 15 mg is said to be equivalent to 150 mg of elemental magnesium. A cal mag liquid might only be half in elemental minerals and only a quarter absorbed. You can get an ionic mag/cal/boron that will give you a better balance at http://www.123minrals.com. For sleep and twitches people can notice the difference within days. For other problems it takes longer to build up stores. I recommend 1/2 to 1 tsp a day for people with pain issues.

If I take it at night will I be able to sleep? I want to take mag oxide to help with the constipation. Should I take milk of magneisa? I take an anti-depressant at bed time can I take mag with this?

  51. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD ND commented on May 5th, 2009 at 9:26 am...
  52. Hello Kat,
I don’t usually recommend magnesium oxide. It’s only 4% absorbed, the rest does act like a laxative but it can flush out nutrients. I can’t talk about your specific case, but if someone is on meds for anxiety and depression, they have a magnesium deficiency, the meds themselves can cause a magnesium deficiency, so it’s best to use a magnesium that is better absorbed, yet can have a gentle laxative effect. Magnesium citrate powder in the form of Natural Calm can be put in drinking water and sipped all day so that magnesium is slowly absorbed into the body and starts doing its work. The amount is increased over a week or 10 days until the gentle laxative effect is evident. After 2-3 months a calcium powder can be added at half the amount of magnesium.
For getting off anxiety and depression meds I refer to http://www.truehope.com and their EMPower Plus program. Trained nutritionists help people slowly wean off their meds using a comprehensive vitamin/mineral supplement that has proven effective in 8 clinical trials.

I work full time then go home to a very energetic 10 year old. I took a 1/4 spoon of mag ox on Saturday and I could not keep my eyes open. I know I need magnesium but I want to take it slowly and the sipping it throughout the day sounds idea but will it make me tired? Thank you for all your help. Kat

  56. Hello Kat,
    You are welcome!
I have no way of knowing if Natural Calm will initially cause tiring. I suspect that if a person builds up slowly by sipping one dose a day and then adds more over time, the 325 enzymes that need magnesium will slowly start revving up and not be a “shock” to the system.

  60. Hello Nancy,
    Nice to hear from you.
Congratulations on making magnesium work for you. Angstrom magnesium could be better but there is no Canadian distributor and with the border tightening, I don’t know how easy it is to ship from the US. If people want more magnesium effects and are taking enough orally to keep the stool loose, I get them to add magnesium oil. Natural Calm Canada distributes magnesium oil. http://www.naturalcalm.ca.
Angstrom minerals are about 10 times more potent than oral so a 625 mg of mag taurate may be equivalent to 62.5 mg of angstrom magnesium.
Don’t forget to take some calcium too!

I’m new to your web site. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and was told to start taking magnesium malate.
Could you please tell me which one to purchase? There are so many brands on the market.
Also, I just started taking ultra soluble calcium with magnesium oxide, vitamin D3 and SOS.
Will taking magnesium malate interfere with what I’m already taking?
Thank you for all your help.

  75. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD ND commented on May 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm...
  76. Welcome Irena,
The product you seem to be talking about has 100 mg of magnesium oxide. To say it’s ultrasoluble is an oxymoron (meaning mornic!) because soluble implies absorbable to the reader. However, magnesium oxide is only FOUR PERCENT absorbed. So you are getting 4 mg of magnesium, when you may need 600mg.
I know magnesium malate is said to work with fibromyalgia but I have never had people tell me it really worked for them. What seems to work for fibromyalgia is magnesium citrate powder (Natural Calm is the most available) Complete H2O Minerals Angstrom magnesium, and magnesium oil. Scan previous posts to see where to get them. Magnesium can help 50% of fibromylagia symptoms. The rest is a combination of treating yeast overgrowth, taking thyroid and adrenal support and sometimes balancing the sex hormones.

  82. Hi Jason,
Glad you like the magnesium book. Yes, magnesium gives you energy but it’s also supposed to relax you and help with insomnia. Sometimes when people first start taking it, the 325 enzyme systems that have been depleted for so long start revving up and you “wake up”.
So, take the magnesium in the morning for a while and you’ll notice all kinds of improvement in your body and then you can take another dose later on in the day to keep building your stores.

Taurate left, so will continue 625, and want to take more. Because the liquid is so absorable, can you take more without the diarea
problem? If so will taking a total of 1000mg be OK. If so what ratio
of the liq calcium should be taken.

  87. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD ND commented on May 22nd, 2009 at 2:10 pm...
  88. Hi Nancy,
In general terms, Compete H2O magnesium added to magnesium taurate should have no laxative effect.
The dosage with the liquid magnesium is 18mg=1 TBSP which is about equal to 200 mg of the taurate.
The liquid calcium is around 20 mg per TBSP and the dosage would be half the amount of liquid magnesium.
Calcium in the diet should take care of much of our calcium needs.

  108. Hi, Dr. Dean!
I have been experiencing a wide array of symptoms that have my doctors puzzled, including: PVC’s/PAC’s, muscle twitches/muscle jerks, fatigue, off and on numbness in fingers/toes, insomnia, some anxiety, etc. (the list goes on . . .) I’ve done my own research, including reading your fantastic book, “The Magnesium Miracle”, and am convinced my problems are related to magnesium deficiency. I would like to begin to restore my magnesium levels, but don’t know where to begin (my doctor doesn’t believe in supplements and won’t give me any guidance). There are so many brands and types of magnesium out there and I want to be sure I purchase the safest, purest, most effective form of magnesium from a reputable company. Any advice on which brand and form to choose would be much appreciated. Thank you so much!

  110. Hi Kristin,
    Thanks for writing!
All those symptoms, that you mentioned “PVC’s/PAC’s, muscle twitches/muscle jerks, fatigue, off and on numbness in fingers/toes, insomnia, some anxiety, etc.” I’m sure you found in the magnesium book. Doctors just try to match them up with a drug and have completely forgotten their biochemistry about magnesium.
I understand about wanting the best brand of magnesium. I don’t sell supplements but I want to use the best ones myself.

Here is the information on the best absorbed magnesium. I can’t “prescribe” for you, so I’m just making general comments.

Complete H2O Minerals. I begin with minerals because I think they are the most depleted and the most necessary nutrients in our bodies. These minerals are in the angstrom size and designed to be absorbed directly into our cells where they are needed. The company website is http://www.completeh2ominerals.com. Their Balanced Life is a ‘multiple mineral’. In general, I recommend that formula along with Magnesium. The dosage is from 1 tsp to 1 TBSP per day. If you can hold the liquid minerals in your mouth for about a minute, their absorption begins immediately. Start slowly with these minerals because as they are accepted into your cells, a cleansing process begins that helps remove the ‘dirt’ minerals that have been clogging up the cells’ receptor sites.

You can also use magnesium oil on the skin. http://www.globallight.net, http://www.magneticclay.com or http://www.magnesiumdirect.com.

Or if you need a gentle laxative effect, you can start with an oral form of magnesium like Natural Calm.

After building magnesium to the point of a slight laxative effect, back off a bit and stay with that dose and add some calcium from http://www.completeh2ominerals.com.

    Aloha
    Carolyn

  114. Hello Kristin

I started taking H20 magnesium about 3 weeks ago and I just
love it. Your symptoms seem classic. Also using H20 Calcium and
have order Iodine and selenium. The magnesium works much faster
that the taurate capsules. Sleeping even better, relaxed muscles,
just calmer. I will continue taking this form of magnesium from now on.

  116. Thank you Dr. Dean, I purchased your book the Miracle of Magnesium and it has changed my life and that of my children.

I am taking thyroid medication and I am unable to take any calcium – the calcium seems to effect the medication. (I am supplementing with large amounts of sesame seeds) I am taking 2 x 250 mg of Jamieson vitamins it says it is a complex of oxide, malate and glycerophosphate. My adrenal glands are blocked so I am also using the magnisium oil. Is it okay to do this for an unlimited time?

Also, I have tried magnesium glycomate but it made me extremely dizzy. Also the magnesium glycomate did not work on my children. I cannot say for sure but they may have had the swine flu. Whatever flu they had it moved to their chest(luckily I got your book around the same time!) – I gave them a dose of the Jamieson magnesium (I cut it in half)and they got better without having to see a doctor!! I am trying to get the magnesium into their diet but they are somewhat resistant. What is the best type of magnesium to give them for their asthma? Is it okay to put the magnesium oil on their sore joints?

  120. Dr. Dean,
Thanks for a great book. I have read it over and over to make sure I don’t miss a thing.

I am a little confused on when to add calcium after starting on Magnesium. In your book you recomend to patient to start calcium after 3 months on the magnesium. In this blog you recomend to Kriten to start calcium after she reaches the right dose on Naturally Calm. I have been on the calm for a month, I have added in small doses of the spray, and just purchased the taurate because I read it is good for sleep. The taurate is only 125 mg. I feel like a chemist trying to figure out what to take when. I am afraid to take calcium. Last week I took 2 antacids, not realizing the high dose of calcium and my feet and legs cramped for days. Coul you please give me advise on introducing calcium again. For now I have been trying to do eat food sources with calcium and keeping a log. Does the calcium from h2o have the same effect as the over the counter calcium?
    Thanks in advance

  122. Hello Theresa,
Calcium and magnesium intake is very individual and there hasn’t been enough research on this or on the various rates of absorption of magnesium from foods and supplements.
In the book I tried to give a general overview. I started with diet and noted that we obtain much more calcium from foods than we do magnesium. So, then with supplements, it has to be judged by an individual’s symptoms and how they react to both magnesium and calcium. It’s very difficult with calcium because when you begin to take it you can actually feel it’s helping but the reason is that it’s forcing magnesium out of storage.
There is no prescription for taking magnesium and calcium.
The H2O calcium and magnesium are low potency and 100% absorbed. They don’t act the same as over the counter minerals because they work at the cellular level. Therefore the calcium will not build up in tissues potentially causing heel spurs, gall stones, fibromyalgia, kidney stones, and athrosclerosis.
I hope this helps sort things out for you.
    Aloha
    Carolyn

In the near future, I plan to purchase the Magnesium Miracle book. Wondered if you could share what brand of Magnesium you recommend. I have just started taking it and the brand available in Calgary, Canada is Magnesium Liquid Ionic. Looking forward to your thoughts.
Thanks so much and Season’s Greetings!

  132. Dr. Dean: Isn’t this wonderful – the response you’re getting on this site? I find I am learning so much by reading other people’s questions and your answers.
I discovered magnesium several years ago after suffering from restless legs since a child (now 76). I have been taking magnesium chloride (made by a compounding drug store) and would take it with calcium before bed, which seemed to work out well. Just now I switched to magnesium citrate (Easy – 100% Natural and Vegan), after talking to people at the Whole Health Show in Toronto. I’m finding it very acidic and am having trouble drinking it and definitely not at night. I’ve tried mixing in rice milk, but still taste the acidity. I’m wondering what suggestions you might have and is this a good one to be taking?

  134. hi,

i’m taking the liquid ‘clams’ from complete h20 minerals that u recommended—–one tube a day, 75mg magnesium, 25mg calcium, and 500mcg boron…..you advised that this was an adequate daily amount…..i do get a bit more in grown by nature’s multivitamin i also take, plus, of course, what i get from my food…..
thanks for your continuing good work

  136. Hello Martie,
Mag chloride or mag citrate are very similar in their effects. If the mag chloride was less acidic for you then maybe you should go back to it.

The one I like is an angstrom form of magnesium. But Liquid Ionic may be similar, so see how you feel on it. Relief of symptoms, better energy and better sleep are your best guide.

  144. Hello Deborah,
Ionic magnesium is probably better absorbed than most minerals.

Here is what Joseph Marion says about angstrom minerals.
“Most minerals [from food] are 8-12% absorbable, Chelated Minerals are 40% absorbable, and liquid Angstrom Minerals are 99% absorbable, being 7000 times smaller than Red blood cells, 1 Million times smaller than a colloidal Mineral, smaller than Ionic, with negative-charge for added absorption.” (Joseph B. Marion; Anti-aging Manual)

  146. Hi Dr Dean

I have a question for you, I have ulcerative colitis and I follow Jini Patel Thompsons protocols from Listen To Your Gut and am going along fine with of course ups and downs and I currently take a tablet which is combined of Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin D3 – is this good to take ?? I take this every 2-3 days as I know that just magnesium can cause diarrhea which I don’t need. So I decided to order Magnesium Bath Crystals & Oil from Global Light and was wondering how often can I use this in a bath as I have a bath every night ?? and how often do I put the oil on my body ?? I have used the oil and I have a few tingles when I first put it on which subsides in 30 seconds to a minute – does this mean that I am deficient ???

I do sometimes think I have a yeast infection where my tongue gets a white coating on it and sometimes vaginal thrush.

I just want to make sure I am on the right track and getting the right dose of magnesium for my body, any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

  148. Hello Debbie,
Thank you for writing but I’m sure you realize I can’t answer health questions if you aren’t a client.
However, in my experience, intestinal yeast overgrowth can be a trigger for symptoms of colitis.
I also work with the diet by Elaine Gottshall’s Breaking the Vicious Cycle. http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

And here is my FAQ about mag oil.
Magnesium Oil and Gel. When I first wrote The Magnesium Miracle, I realized that many people can’t take oral magnesium because of the laxative effect. Therefore I began researching and then advising people to put supersaturated magnesium chloride—called magnesium oil on their skin to bypass the intestines; stimulate DHEA production that occurs in the skin; use it in baths and foot baths for muscle aches, joint pain, and foot pain and neuropathy. You can find out more about magnesium oil at http://www.globallight.net. Dilute 50:50 with distilled water or coconut oil and apply 1-2 tsp on your skin every day. OR you can apply 50:50 diluted mag oil with distilled water all over your body and leave on for at least 30 minutes, then shower off because it gets itchy when the mag oil dries. One ounce of oil is a good amount to put in a bath.
    I hope all this helps.
    Aloha
    Carolyn
