Madagascar Motivation

Carolyn Dean MD ND | Saturday, January 30, 2010

Scene from Madagascar's
It took a 15 year study, involving 1,861 seniors (and who knows how much money!) to determine that exercise improves quality of life. Something an animated children’s film like Madagascar already figured out.

It’s amazing how much money researchers will spend to reach a conclusion so obvious that a brain dead lemur could have told you

The Archives of Internal Medicine published a study that followed 1,861 people (born in 1920 and 1921) over a 15 year period. They determined that “older adults who… exercise appear to live longer and have a lower risk of disability.” (ScienceDaily)

If you do even one hour of walking a day, according to this study, you are 17% less likely to die before your 88th birthday than if you just sat home watching talk shows. And your chances of being able to take care of yourself and perform day-to-day tasks, well into your eighties, are about 20% higher than the average.

Statistics are great for the left brain – but aren’t always the most motivating when it comes time to do the deed…

To get myself revved up for exercise I hum “I Like to Move It, Move It” from the film Madagascar. Click the black triangular button below (on the lower left) to experience some Madagascar Motivation…

I Like to Move It, Move It

Walking (or dancing!) is free and should be done daily.

Not only does it get you moving, moving, it gets you outside, vitalizing your body cells with fresh air and building your immune system with vitamin D from sunlight.

Swing your arms and set a daily goal of time or distance. Bring an MP3 player, a friend, a dog, a lemur… whatever gets you to move it, move it!
