Boar and Bananas

John Locke carrying boar
John Locke from LOST bringing a boar back to camp — a regular dinner for those living on The Island.

As the final season of LOST broadcasts tonight, here’s another one of my wellness tips unraveling the mysterious healing powers of “The Island”…

It should really be no surprise that the survivors of Flight 815 experienced exceptional health. Just think what most of them were eating beforehand… Fake food from factory farming loaded with preservatives, corn syrup and cheap oil…especially Hurley!

Yet when they arrive on the island they quickly finish off the airplane meals and wonder what will they eat? They can’t live off tropical fruit alone.

At that point John Locke, who had found his suitcase full of hunting knives, sends a blade flying through the air. “We’ll hunt,” he says. “We know there are wild boar on the island. Razor backs by the look of them… ”

Whether you’re into eating wild boar or not…  these 250 pound rats living off grass and herbs are far, far healthier than the beef being offered in your local supermarket. Unless you’re buying your meat from an organic, grass fed farm, it’s most likely been fed an unnatural diet of corn, soybeans and even other dead animals (sometimes their own kin).

Yes, yes, organic costs more… but go for four ounces and not 22! (Four ounces has 28 grams of protein – more than enough for a meal.) If you can only afford to eat organic meat occasionally, supplement your diet with  nuts, seeds, legumes, organic dairy and fish.

Fish is tricky, though.  Most of what’s being sold in grocery stores isn’t suitable for human consumption. Personally, I buy my fish from Vital Choice. Testing shows that the minuscule amounts of mercury in their fish fall far below the already conservative safety level set by the FDA. You can check them out at: www.safewildseafood.com.
