Aloha, I had a request from a blog subscriber to comment on the link between dairy, specifically casein (milk protein), and cancer. Pat said “I read the book, The China Study, and wish I hadn’t. I love dairy products but this book makes a pretty compelling case for the downside of casein….what do you think?” As many of you already know, I’m not fanatic when it comes to diet and believe in moderation in everything. And, as synchronicity would have it, I was interviewed recently by Susan Schenck from LiveFoodFactor.com. Susan is writing a book on the health problems experienced by vegans and vegetarians. We had a long discussion about The China Study, which heavily promotes vegetarianism. . .to the point of scaring people. Before I go any further, let me just say that Susan is a Live Food/Raw Food expert, so she supports the vegan lifestyle. About The China Study Susan said, sometimes emphasizing her words with CAPS. “Well, NO ONE in the study was a vegan. ALL of them were getting SOME animal foods, and no doubt SOME MEAT. T. Colin Campbell says that clearly in the book. Also, being an acupuncturist, I know how much the Chinese PRIZE animal foods! So the ones who ate less animal foods did so only out of POVERTY, not health! Furthermore, I believe in raw foods, and of course none of them ate raw animal foods. Dr. Campbell admitted that to my editor in an email. And my other reservation is that in China they use heavy doses of pesticides, including DDT. That would have made the meat less healthful — with the DDT in the fats.” Specifically about casein milk protein and cancer. Early on in T. Colin Campbell’s career he identified isolated casein fed to rats at high doses as an initiator of cancer. But that’s about all he found. From there he seemed to leap to conclusions that are not warranted. For an educated opposing view of The China Study go to The Weston A. Price website. As for what to do about dairy. As I explain in Module 13 of my online wellness program, Future Health Now! do some experimenting with dairy to see if your body likes it or not. And remember, warmed and lightly cooked milk and cheeses are much easier to digest. |
