I recently received a question about Athlete’s Foot AKA Funky Fungal Feet. Here’s an excerpt on treating this condition naturally from my Future Health Now Encyclopedia. Athlete’s foot is a very common condition caused by a fungus that lives on the skin. Warm, dark, damp environments, antibiotics, and a high sugar diet encourage fungal growth. People in tropical climates are more prone to this infection, but sweaty footgear and walking barefoot in spa and sports facility showers are common causes in North America. In the acute stage, fungal skin infections may blister and crack and discharge clear liquid. When the infection is acute, keep the area dry and uncovered between soaks. Most often it is characterized by chronic irritation and annoying itchiness. Clay footbaths: Soak every night or at least every two nights for 15-20 minutes. Directions: Put 1/8th cup of clay in 1 quart of hot water along with one tablespoon of sea salt and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Spin in a blender to mix and pour into a basis to soak your feet. Source: LL’s Magnetic Clay. Another remedy is La Pacho or Taheebo tea. Gently boil 3 tablespoons in 1 quart of water for 1 hour. Soak for 15-20 minutes. You can rotate the clay soak one night and the La Pacho the next. After soaking, apply antifungal cream or lotion. There are many over‐the‐counter medications that can be used two or three times a day but must be continued for at least four weeks. Preparations available in health food stores include powerful antifungals like wild oregano oil, tea tree oil and garlic oil. After soaking your feet, scrub them to remove any dead skin that can harbor the fungus, and dry them well ‐ perhaps even with a hair dryer. Clay powder helps trap fungus spores, dries athlete’s foot blisters and keeps your feet dry inside your shoes. After soaking your feet, powder with the same clay you soaked in. Dust ½ teaspoon of clay powder directly inside your shoes and wear cotton socks. Susceptibility to athlete’s foot may be due to an overgrowth of yeast. Treatment for yeast includes avoiding sugar, wheat, dairy, and alcohol for a period of time to starve the yeast in the gastrointestinal tract.
