An appreciative reader wrote recently about my very favorite mineral, magnesium. “Dr. Dean, I just wanted to say thanks for bringing the value of magnesium supplementation to light. A dear friend of mine arranged a meeting with a Random House editor in 1999 so I could pitch a book I was writing with my Chinese Medicine teacher. The editor had just signed a similar book so my offer was rejected. However, she had just had a beneficial experience with magnesium and asked me if I would write a book on magnesium. I thought, how bizarre, a whole book on one mineral. But I did some research and realized that the meager amount of magnesium I was taking was not enough because I had several symptoms of magnesium deficiency myself. Heart palpitations, crippling Charlie horse cramps at night and trouble sleeping. My learning curve continued but it wasn’t until the second edition of The Magnesium Miracle that I found non-laxative forms of magnesium. I found that I required so much magnesium that I would get a laxative effect when I took too much by mouth. What I do instead is spray myself all over with magnesium after my morning walk and air dry. Then after about a half hour, I take my shower. And for oral magnesium, I use the angstrom form.
