Food Based Supplements Are Best

Carolyn Dean MD ND | Monday, November 29, 2010

A reader from the UK asked the following questions which gives me the opportunity to tell you about why I prefer food-based supplements.

“I see that you recommend multivitamins made by ‘Grown by Nature’ which is very similar to the ‘Animus’ products in the UK. Would you explain in one of your newsletters the difference between these products and the typical products we have used for many years which have much higher dosage.”

Animus products are exactly the same as Grown by Nature. I visited the Grown by Nature plant in New Jersey several years ago and I’ve never seen a more efficient and hygienic operation. In fact, Grown by Nature offers my readers a 20% discount on your purchases. At checkout, just enter the code: gbn123.

Here’s their manufacturing process. The active vitamin or mineral substrate is “fed” to one-celled plants in enormous vats. In most cases saccromyces cerevisiae or lactobacillus acidophilus are used. Saccromyces is a once-celled bakers or brewers yeast and all cell wall components are thoroughly removed when the process is complete.

Citrus pulp is used to create Vitamin C, because it is naturally high in this vitamin. Carrot pulp is used to produce Beta Carotene. And alfalfa allows the plants to make Vitamin K. The enzymes naturally present in the plants integrate the vitamins or minerals so thoroughly, that they are fully incorporated into a food matrix.

Then, the vitamin and mineral products are harvested, freeze dried and tableted, following a strictly monitored procedure, to ensure that nothing, (e.g. heat, or pressure during manufacture), can interfere with their availability to the body’s natural digestive processes, thus providing the body with a superior bioavailable form of supplementation.

I prefer these supplements because they contain the whole supplement complex. For example, Vitamin C is not just ascorbic acid. It’s a complex of a dozen natural chemicals. When I take Vitamin C I want the whole enchilada, not just the ascorbate. The same goes for the B complex and the E complex.

Food-based nutritional supplements made in this way incorporate other food nutrients that are necessary for proper absorption within the body. In contrast, standard vitamins are lab-synthesized chemicals not recognized by the body as food. In order to get any effect from synthetic supplements, the dose often has to be very high to force receptors to accept the imposter. On the other hand, the body accepts Food State supplements with open arms. It’s about quality, not quantity.

NOTE: Only you can know if something is helping you. If you don’t feel well on a supposed beneficial product, listen to your body and stop taking it! Knowing when to Not take something is a big part of taking responsibility for your health!

P.P.S. I cannot answer personal health questions by email. However, please send general questions that I may be able to answer in my blog. But first, google my name with the condition you are inquiring about and see if I’ve already addressed it somewhere on the web.
