Hurt by Hormones

Carolyn Dean MD ND | Friday, December 24, 2010

Have you been “hurt by hormones?”

Many of my female clients have been misdiagnosed and mistreated with synthetic estrogens and they don’t know where to turn.

I just received a heartbreaking email from a reader of my blog.

Mary, like so many other women in their early 50’s, is going through a tough menopause. She was given an estradiol pill (synthetic), an anti-depressant and a medication for panic attacks. Antidepressants make you gain weight and she did – about 30 pounds. And no matter how much exercise Mary does, she can’t lose it.

So, instead of giving her balanced hormone treatment with bioidentical progesterone and a small amount of estrogen and thyroid hormone, what does her doctor do? He puts her on phentermine. It’s an appetite suppressant.

Sounds innocuous doesn’t it? Until you read the side effects and drug/disease interactions. I’m listing them here because you often aren’t given the list of side effects with your medication anymore. You should always know what you’re taking. But your doctor and pharmacist don’t usually have the time to tell you.

Side Effects of Phentermine:
Most Frequent:
False Sense of Well-Being, Hypertension, Insomnia, Nervousness

Less Frequent:
Abdominal Pain with Cramps, Allergic Dermatitis, Allergic Reactions, Blurred Vision, Conduction Disorder of the Heart, Constipation, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Drowsy, Dysuria, Headache Disorder, Libido Changes, Skin Rash, Urticaria, Xerostomia

Rare:
Depression, Dysgeusia, Erectile Dysfunction, Hyperhidrosis, Impaired Cognition, Increased Urinary Frequency, Nausea, Psychotic Disorder, Pulmonary Hypertension, Valvular Heart Disease, Vomiting

Drug-Disease Contraindications Most Significant
Acute Angina Pectoris, Arteriosclerosis Obliterans, Disease of Cardiovascular System, Feeling Agitated, Glaucoma, Hyperthyroidism, Moderate Hypertension, Pulmonary Hypertension, Secondary Glaucoma, Severe Uncontrolled Hypertension

Significant
Alcoholism, Conduction Disorder of the Heart, Edema, Fainting, Psychotic Disorder, Substance Abuse, Valvular Heart Disease

Possibly Significant
Mild Hypertension, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Mary is on an antidepressant and she’s taking an appetite suppressant that can cause nervousness, insomnia and depression! How crazy is that?

All she wants is some honest help. She says her energy is rock bottom, her memory is worsening and she has brain fog.

Here’s what I suggest to Mary and all those women suffering hormonal imbalance. Go to Dr. Roby’s Mitchell’s website and downlowd his hormone questionnaires for your own education about what hormones really do in your body.

While you’re filling out Roby’s questionnaires, order Dr. Michael Platt’s book, The Miracle of Bio-Identical Hormones. It’s the most easy-to-understand information I’ve ever read on bio-identical hormones. Then, find a doctor who will take you off synthetic estradiol and put you on bio identical progesterone and maybe some bio identical estrogen and some natural thyroid hormone (Armour).

Of course if you look into Dr. Platt practice you’ll find he’s is being attacked by his medical association for his work because it’s not the standard practice of medicine. And if his approach has unfortunately harmed a patient…please be reminded that not every treatment is good for everyone. Please always use your commonsense. Nobody knows your body better than you do. You are the judge of how your own body feels.
