A former patient in Toronto and now a member of Future Health Now! wrote to ask me about bioidentical hormones. I’ll call her Sherry. Sherry reminded me that I had prescribed bioidentical hormones to her many years ago. She felt fine on them all these years but in the last year Sherry’s been hearing scary things about hormones. She told her doctor her concerns and because of her family history with three female relatives dying of breast cancer her doctor felt that if she was worried she should get off the bioidentical hormones. She hasn’t used them for about six months and lately hasn’t been feeling well and has trouble sleeping and her skin has gotten very dry. Sherry asked me if I thought bioidentical hormones were safe for her to use. I told Sherry that it’s synthetic hormones that are poisonous but bioidentical hormones (the same as our natural ones) are safe. I’m on bioidentical hormone cream myself. Serendipitously, just minutes before Sherry’s email I received a note from my friend, Dr. Roby Mitchell who is a bioidentical hormone expert. Roby was commenting on a recent study called “Progesterone: the ultimate endometrial tumor suppressor.” The researchers of this progesterone study in Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism had the following to say about their work: “Estrogen drives epithelial proliferation, and progesterone inhibits growth and causes cell differentiation. The importance of progesterone as a key inhibitor of carcinogenesis is reflected by the observation that women who ovulate and produce progesterone almost never get endometrial cancer. In this review we describe seminal research findings that define progesterone as the major endometrial tumor suppressor.” Roby says, “I was surprised when I first started prescribing bioidentical hormones at how ignorant the ObGyn community was concerning hormones. The addition of a methyl group to natural progesterone changes the molecule in such a way as to make it a poison to humans-methylprogesterone (Provera). This drug has been responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of women. Natural progesterone, on the other hand, is so safe that levels escalate during pregnancy. Natural progesterone and bioidentical progesterone prevents breast and uterine cancer.” As for bioidentical estrogen, it mimics natural estrogen and doctors who prescribe bioidentical estrogen mostly use the safest estrogen (Estriol) and minimize the least safe estrogen (Estradiol). The estrogen combination most commonly prescribed is Biest which is 80% Estriol and 20% Estradiol. However, the allopathic medical community instead of opting for safety in the form of Estriol chooses to prescribe the unsafe Estradiol in an unsafe synthetic form fueling the breast cancer epidemic we see today. Where can you get bioidentical hormones? Unfortunately, that’s the difficult part because so few doctors have been trained in the use of bioidentical hormones. I’d advise you to go to the website of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists and use their Pharmacy locator. Call the pharmacy closest to you and ask for their list of bioidentical hormone prescribing doctors. You’ll also have to read up on bioidentical hormones so you can work with your doctor to receive the right prescription. My book, called Hormone Balance is not specifically about bioidentical hormones. It takes you through diet, detox and supplements to naturally balance your hormones. If after that program you still require hormones, read Dr. Michael Platt’s book called The Miracle of Bio-Identical Hormones.
