The Virtues of Coconut Oil

Carolyn Dean MD ND | Thursday, June 30, 2011

What have I learned about coconut oil since my post of June 10, 2011, Take 5 TBSP of Coconut Oil and Call Me In the Morning?

One thing I learned is that you can use coconut oil as nasal drops. In my Completement Now! online wellness program, my second free module is about Nasal Lubrication. I talk about sesame oil but readers wrote me and said they use coconut oil for the same purpose. You can receive the first four modules of Completement Now! free.

Other readers said they use a tablespoon of coconut oil before meals and it prevents heartburn!

One woman had a terrible time keeping any food down at all. It seemed that so many things upset her stomach that she was starving her body. A friend suggested that she eat a couple tablespoons of coconut oil 20 minutes before meals to see if that helped. She is now eating like a normal person and the coconut oil has become part of her regular diet and her stomach issues are gone.

Another reader uses it for the symptoms of acid reflux. He says when he wakes up with burning in his throat, he takes one tablespoon of coconut oil and it does the trick.

I’ve also recommended coconut oil to a construction foreman who has itchy leg rashes because he has to wear jeans on the job here in the hot weather of Maui. I called it a heat rash but it was probably a fungal infection. He reported within a few days that the rash had disappeared.

Here’s one detailed testimonial from a woman who had an itching rash that was getting worse and worse for several weeks. She said:

“I seriously thought I was going to have to go to the doctor but I was embarrassed to go because I’m overweight and the rash was in the fold under my stomach ‘apron’. First, I tried an anti fungal cream. When that gave me no relief, I went on to try OTC antibiotic and cortisone creams and I don’t remember what else and it was just getting worse and worse and extremely uncomfortable.

I’d been reading about coconut oil’s virtues, and had purchased some a few weeks before. In desperation I decided to try it. So, after my shower I applied a teaspoon or two of coconut oil, making certain that I covered all the irritated area. When I woke up in the morning, I couldn’t believe it! I was so happy! My skin had to be 90% better. The irritation and itching were gone and it was no longer an angry red color. I continued to apply a little for the next couple of days and again at night. Now, I continue to use it off and on, just to be on the safe side.

What brand do I recommend? Tropical Traditions. I use their gold label brand, their coconut oil body lotion and lip gloss but there are dozens of great products to choose from. I’m rushing this post out tonight because I just noticed that Tropical Traditions has a two-for-one sale on their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil that ends today!
