Keep Kids off Drugs

Carolyn Dean MD ND | Saturday, January 21, 2012

I spent the morning at the Swap Meet (farmer’s market) in Kahului with my friend, Barbara-Ann (the best masseuse in the world) where we were blitzing everyone with our bubble gun. Everyone loves bubbles, especially kids. So, I came home ready to do a blog dedicated to our most precious resource.

A recent Medscape article talks about “the short supply of drugs used to treat ADHD, including certain brands and dosages of dextroamphetamine with amphetamine (Adderall, Shire PLC) and methylphenidate (Ritalin, Novartis).”

Apparently doctors and parents are outraged that the DEA is controlling the amount of amphetamines their children are getting. Personally, I think the drug companies are causing this shortage in order to get the doctors and parents to force the DEA to allow more speed to be used on kids.

But why are we drugging kids in the first place?

This week, Abby Nelson sent me her article called, 10 Common Medications your Child Should Never Take. It’s a very thorough piece explaining the side effects of medications commonly given to kids.

Let’s get this straight; our kids are not suffering from an amphetamine deficiency or any other drug deficiency! They are suffering nutrient deficiencies. And simple nutritional formulas treat them every bit as well as drugs…and without the added side effects of stunting their growth and the potential of turning them into drug addicts.

But why medicate when you can give your child safe supplements? My overall supplement recommendation is Kids Calm Multi. It’s a liquid supplement by Natural Vitality that contains organic fruits and vegetables, DHA, EPA, amino acids along with A, B, C, D, magnesium, zinc and calcium. You can get it at a deep discount at my favorite online retailer VitaCost.com.

I’m a big supporter of Natural Vitality and highly recommend their environmentally aware online magazine Organic Connections. This month’s issue features a 14-year old beekeeper, chicken farmer, and sustainable-food advocate, Orren Fox. This young man is a true testament to the immense benefits of natural living.

To learn more about safe and effective natural remedies, read my booklets, Kids Health: A Doctor’s Guide for Parents and Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments and my article on Natural News, Homeopathy for Children’s Emotional Health.

If you feel your child is toxic from vaccines and junk food, you can offer soothing baths in detoxifying clay and magnesium. I recommend the Natural Clay and Magnesium Flakes at LL’s Magnetic Clay. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) may be a substitute but I’ve had parents who have tested different brands and found they contained measurable levels of mercury. So, I can’t recommend Epsom salts for kids.

Of course, I should mention diet. It’s important to limit your child’s intake of sugar and rotate wheat and dairy so that they don’t eat these foods every day. Encourage them to eat vegetables and fruits and stay away from processed and fried foods. A client of mine who took my advice and turned her kids health around is writing a recipe book. I’ll let you know when it’s available.
