In a move that has shocked many prominent nutritionists, the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), “a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together the world’s top researchers, clinical nutritionists and industry” made a “scientific statement” in their publication, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that “processed foods make up an essential part of the American diet.”
First of all, that’s a bunch of hogwash and Newspeak straight out of George Orwell’s 1984 novel. Processed foods are not food – and to say they are an essential part of our diet is simply catering to the processed food industry.
Marion Nestle, a world famous nutritionist and author, writes about “Conflicts of interest in nutrition societies: American Society of Nutrition” in her Nov 30, 2013 blog. She says “I’ve become increasingly worried about food company influence on ASN. Food companies fund sessions at ASN annual meetings. But I’m even more concerned about food company sponsorship of scientific studies published in AJCN. The results of sponsored studies almost invariably benefit the sponsor. Exceptions are scarce. The conflicts are so blatant that I can often guess from reading an abstract who the study’s sponsor must be.”
From what Dr. Nestle says, it’s very likely the processed food industry is behind the “scientific statement” about the essential nature of processed foods misleading millions of consumers.
Dr. Robert Lustig, whose YouTube Sugar: The Bitter Truth has about 5 Million views, criticizes the statement as likely coming from the board of directors and not from any peer-reviewed source.
The ASN pays no attention to the fact that we need to enrich our food supply, not accept its adulteration. In my Magnesium Miracle book I write the following: Sugar causes magnesium deficiency; 28 molecules of magnesium are required to metabolize one molecule of sucrose (table sugar), 56 molecules of magnesium are required to metabolize one molecule of fructose. I also warn people that the soil is depleted of minerals which means our food has very little to offer. Adding chemicals, preservatives, fats and sugars creates calorie dense and nutrient poor food that cannot sustain health.
I am flabbergasted and all I can do is blog about it and tell readers once again “You Are On Your Own.” Nobody with any commonsense is in charge of medicine, nutrition or government when it comes to giving you advice about staying healthy. You have to do your own research, use your own commonsense and stay healthy.
