A few weeks ago, on Dr. Carolyn Dean Live!, Ginney and I coined the term Viral Googleitis. To me, it means that we are infected with so much contradictory health information that it’s making us sick! The information that we access is often not reliable because there are so many vested interests involved. Currently there are 29,000 nutritional supplements on the market and countless Multi Level Marketing companies – all wanting to grab a slice of the multi billion dollar supplement pie.
Howard Straus, son of Charlotte Gerson (famous for carrying on her father’s Natural Cancer Therapy), wrote a special commentary for the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service called The Rise and Fall of Wikipedia First in Internet Searches; Last in Reliability.
I have the honor of being on the board of both The Gerson Institute and The Orthomolecular Medicine News Service so I was especially interested to hear what Howard had to say and you should be too.
Here are some excerpts:
“Wikipedia’s credibility among serious researchers has always been very low. It is hardly surprising that college professors across the board disallow citations from Wikipedia in students’ papers.”
“This writer and many others in the field of alternative medicine and natural healing have experienced Wikipedia bias personally when contributing well-documented, carefully researched articles to the site, only to have them be radically altered and deleted, by anonymous “editors,” then being banned from further editing or contributions. This is impossible to reconcile with a free flow of information.”
“Wikipedia’s founder ridiculed a petition by 8,000 people to have a more robust discussion of alternative medicine, saying in part: ‘No, you have to be kidding me. Every single person who signed this petition needs to go back to check their premises and think harder about what it means to be honest, factual, truthful. What we won’t do is pretend that the work of lunatic charlatans is the equivalent of ‘true scientific discourse’. It isn’t.’”
“Here is Wikipedia’s page on Chemo. Note that it minimizes negative results; never mentions the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s study that finds that chemotherapy makes cancer much worse; doesn’t get into negative effects until far down in the article; nowhere in the article does it mention the word “safety”; and “effectiveness” is almost glossed over. It does, however, list the revenues from the top ten chemotherapeutic agents from 2013: they total $37.47 billion dollars. That is just in one year.”
The modus operandi of many drug companies and supplement companies is similar – create the disease and offer the cure. When you match drugs or supplements to symptoms you can end up like one of my clients was on 300-500 supplement pills per day dispensed by her nutritionist.
What do I offer? People who follow my work tell me that I am a constant and reliable source of balanced health information. I do sell 5 Total Body ReSet formulas and I no longer apologize for doing this because the results are so fantastic. I say it would be malpractice to withhold this vital information. So if you want information, I have it and if you want products, I have them. And if you want both – all the better for your health!
In case you never get to the fine print at the end of my blogs, here is what I say at the end of each one. You can use it as a guide to what to take and who to listen to.
“Only you can know if something is helping you. If you don’t feel well on a supposed beneficial product, listen to your body and stop taking it! Knowing when to Not take something is a big part of taking responsibility for your health. WARNING: This blog is not to be misconstrued as medical advice. It’s up to you to make the decisions about your own health. I have zero staff and I cannot answer personal health questions by email. However, please send general questions that I may be able to answer in my blog. But first, google my name with the condition you are inquiring about and see if I’ve already addressed it somewhere on the web.”
