When I saw this Medscape survey article – “Daily Pill? No Thanks, I’ll Take Early Death” I had to immediately share it with you. The study found that one-third of 1,000 subjects would rather have a shortened lifespan (by 2 years) than take daily drugs to prevent cardiovascular disease.

I’ll quote heavily from an article called “Heart Disease and Lifestyle: Why Are Doctors in Denial?” bemoaning the fact that “In a randomized controlled trial of primary prevention, no cardiologist would want to be compared against a good physical trainer or nutritionist. We would get trounced. Our calcium scores, biomarkers, pills, and procedures would not stand a chance. The study would be terminated early due to obvious superiority of lifestyle coaching over doctoring…”

A Comedy of Medical Errors

A friend, who I will call Sylvia, needed a medical letter from her psychiatrist to release the pension she has paid into at work for 20 years. He had already filled out her long-term disability forms so she didn’t think the pension form would present a problem; she simply mailed it to him. When the form wasn’t sent in, Sylvia made an appointment with her doctor.

Demon Drugs

I’ve been troubled recently by two stories that at first seemed unassociated. One terrifying story is of Mexican young people setting themselves on fire to protest the escalating drug wars in their country that have resulted in 43 student-teachers being murdered. The second is about the increasing numbers of doctor suicides as a result of them working helplessly and hopelessly in a drug-based medical system.
