Filter & Detox

Systems: Liver · Kidney

Filtration and detoxification are how the body takes out the trash. If these processes are impeded, the body is awash in toxins. The liver is the main garbage disposal and recycling plant; it runs crucial methylation and sulfation pathways that bind and break apart dangerous chemical compounds flushing them out through the intestines and kidneys. The kidneys filter out these toxins from the blood while they keep what’s needed to balance fluids and minerals. Both organs lean on the same nutrients: magnesium as a cofactor in detox enzymes; the methylated B vitamins that drive methylation; the sulfur-based amino acids that run sulfation pathways; and the potassium and trace minerals the kidneys need to balance electrolytes. This page gathers the two systems, liver and kidneys, and the vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids that enhance their normal function to defeat aging.

The systems in this Pillar

Two systems that keep the body squeaky clean get old together, but they don’t have to age if they lean on nutrients that promote methylation, sulfation and mineral balance.

Liver

The liver is the body’s methylation hub, running the biochemical processes that support normal metabolism. The three forms of liver detoxification are Phase I (biotransformation), turning fat soluble toxins into water-soluble chemicals that are more easily eliminated; Phase II (conjugation) binding toxins to neutralize their harm; and Phase III (elimination) through the intestines via bile and the kidneys via urine. Each phase plays a crucial role in processing and removing harmful chemicals from the body relying heavily on the methylated B vitamins and magnesium. Remember that magnesium is necessary for the proper function of 80% of known metabolic processes.

Kidney

The kidneys balance fluids, minerals, and electrolytes as they filter the blood. That steady balance depends on magnesium, potassium, and trace minerals that the body loses with age – the kidneys are “leakier” and don’t hold onto these nutrients – so we must take more. Kidney glomeruli are tiny clusters of blood vessels that have a huge surface area (930 square inches) that filter waste and excess substances from the blood. Healthy kidneys filter about half a cup of blood every minute, removing waste and extra water to make urine. In a single day, our kidneys filter about 150 quarts of blood. Most of the water and other beneficial substances that are filtered are returned to the blood by kidney tubules. Only one to two quarts become urine. To do all this important work, the kidneys receive a significantly higher blood flow compared to other organs, accounting for about 25% of the output of the heart.

The formulas behind this Pillar

These nutrients are taken from the seven-formula Maui ReSet Bundle. They carry the methylation, sulfation, and mineral-balance nutrients the filtering organs run on. Swipe to see each.

Methylation
ReAline®

ReAline®

Methylated B vitamins with the two sulfur-based amino acids (L-methionine, the precursor to the antioxidant glutathione, and L’taurine, which is a sulfur amino acid) support crucial liver methylation and sulfation detoxification pathways.

Lead mineral
ReMag®

ReMag®

Picometer-sized, stabilized ions of magnesium make it the most important mineral powering methylation and sulfation detoxification pathways in the liver.

Electrolyte
Pico Potassium®

Pico Potassium®

Potassium supports the fluid and electrolyte balance that is a crucial function of the kidneys.

Trace minerals
ReMyte®

ReMyte®

Twelve picometer-sized stabilized mineral ions including selenium, zinc, and copper are necessary for antioxidant defense in the filtering organs that also need all these trace minerals to effect a healthy electrolyte balance.

Antioxidant
Vitamin C ReSet®

Vitamin C ReSet®

Vitamin C is important for antioxidant support in the organs that filter and detox. This vitamin is necessary for the production of collagen protein, which the liver and kidneys rely on for their basic structural framework. Collagen also plays a crucial role in maintaining liver function and combating fibrosis.

The science of nutrition and synergy

The liver is the body’s methylation hub, with methylation helping to convert toxic substances into water-soluble compounds for excretion. The methylated B vitamins, folate, B12, B2, and B6, are most involved. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements summarizes the role of folate in normal methylation metabolism. Magnesium is a cofactor in 600 to 800 enzyme processes, many of them in the liver, and the NIH notes magnesium’s broad role across the body’s enzyme systems, including the liver.

The kidneys are crucial in mineral-balance releasing excess sodium or holding onto it when necessary. They do this work with all the minerals, constantly holding fluids, electrolytes, and minerals in balance and intricately using potassium and the trace minerals as cofactors to support their work. Delivered together, these nutrients support the liver and kidneys in their important work of taking out the trash.

Note: The evidence above is largely observational. Results can be strongest in people who are deficient, and results can vary. Nutrients support normal structure and function. The word detox here means the body’s own normal clearance pathways, not a cleanse. These formulas do not treat liver disease, kidney disease, or any condition. If you have questions about any of these conditions, please consult your health care practitioner.

Common questions

What does the Filter and Detox Pillar cover?

It groups the two organs that keep the body clean: the liver, the methylation and sulfation processing plant, and the kidneys, balancing fluids and minerals and filtering the blood. Both lean on the same core nutrients.

What does detox actually mean here?

The body’s own normal clearance pathways work 24/7 if we give them the right nutrient building blocks. A cleanse or a flush are not necessary since the body is naturally detoxing constantly. The nutrients on this page support the normal chemistry and mineral balance that supports this function.

Why are the methylated B vitamins so central here?

The liver’s core job runs on methylation biochemistry, and the methylated B vitamins feed it directly, with magnesium as the mineral that rules the process. That same methylation biochemistry is central to how biological aging itself is measured.

Can these formulas heal or cleanse my liver or kidneys?

No, the FDA will not permit such claims. These are vitamins and minerals that should be in the food supply; they are not drugs or cleanses. They support the normal structure and function of the liver and kidneys. They do not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent liver disease, kidney disease, or any condition. Speak with your health care practitioner about any specific concerns.

How does this page relate to the other longevity pages?

This is one of six organ-system Pillar pages. It focuses on how the liver and kidneys age and what nutrients support and slow aging. For the daily routine and the full seven-formula foundation, follow the links below.
