Methylation and Epigenetic Age

Lens: Progression to Regression

Your DNA carries chemical tags called methyl groups (CH3) that shift in amounts and patterns as you age. They number about 28 million and TruDiagnostic TruAge labs test for about one million of those tags to determine cell and organ age. DNA methylation is currently the most promising molecular marker for monitoring aging as the tag numbers decrease with age. Epigenetic clocks like the Harvard OMICm Age and the Yale Symphony Age read those tags to estimate your biological age, which may be younger than your chronological age. The CH3-methyl-chemistry that places and maintains the tags depends on methyl carriers like folate (B9), B3, B6, B12, and methionine. Keep these nutrients well supplied and you support the very system that the clocks measure and that can defy aging.

Participants improved on an epigenetic age clock (OMICm and or Symphony) over six months. A seventh participant showed improvement in her pace of aging clock.

Behind that number are ten everyday people, ages 34 to 79, who followed the same daily Maui ReSet Protocol for six months while living ordinary lives, with real, and sometimes severe stress, and real health histories. The clocks did not move the same way for everyone. The full picture, including the participants whose readings held steady or rose, is told on the Maui ReSet Study Page. Click Here. Let’s look at two of the participants who saw their epigenetic age improve the most. Here is what that looked like, in the six-month study.

Where it showed up

Helen, 70
Study participant, retested at 6 months
63 58 OMICm
biological age
Largest age clock improvement in the pilot

Housebound at the start with symptoms she feared were neurological. By six months she reports she can drive and take long walks again, and her energy, in her words, is “fabulous.”

Claudia, 53
Study participant, retested at 6 months
39 35 OMICm
biological age
Largest symptom score improvement

Already below her chronological age at the start, and she still improved further, alongside the study’s largest self-reported symptom drop. In her words, “my brain has changed.”

Methylation is teamwork, so the foundation brings these formulas together. ReAline® leads, with ReMag® and ReMyte® in support. Swipe to see each.

Lead formula
ReAline®

ReAline®

Four methylated B vitamins with L methionine and L’taurine, provide the methyl groups that are necessary for DNA formation and give us the measure of improvement in over one million methylation tags.

ReMag®

ReMag®

Highly-absorbed picometer-sized, stabilized magnesium ions activate the methylation enzymes, so the B vitamins work in concert rather than alone.

The science of methylation

Folate (B9), B12, B2, and B6 are the coenzymes that carry and place the methyl groups in methylation pathways. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that folate is required for normal cell division and for homocysteine metabolism. This is exactly what ReAline® supplies, the B vitamins in their active, methylated forms with L’methionine as another methyl donor, so the body keeps a steady supply of the raw materials the methylation pathways depend on. The enzymes that run that system need magnesium to work, which is why ReMag® and ReMyte® sit beside ReAline® in the Maui ReSet Bundle, and why Dr. Dean says methylation is ruled by magnesium.

Independent research links methyl biochemistry to how the epigenetic clocks move. In a nationally representative sample of United States adults, higher serum folate was associated with a younger epigenetic age, while higher homocysteine, a sign the pathway is running short, tracked with an older one. A review of the field describes methylation metabolism as a way to modulate age associated DNA methylation, calling it a milestone for healthy aging. Longitudinal work in aging men has similarly tied plasma folate and vitamin B6 to DNA methylation age.

These are mostly observational findings that are gene and lifestyle dependent, and they are about the nutrients rather than this product.

Common questions

What is epigenetic age, and how is it different from chronological age?

Epigenetic age is an estimate of how old your body looks biologically, read from the methylation patterns on your DNA. Chronological age is simply the years since you were born. Clocks such as the OMICm Age and the Symphony Age measure the biological estimate, and the gap between the two is the part an optimum nutrient lifestyle can influence over time.

How do B vitamins support DNA methylation?

Folate, vitamins B12, B2, and B6 are the coenzymes of methyl metabolism, the pathways that produce and distribute the methyl groups that DNA methylation depends on. When these nutrients are optimal, the body has the raw materials it needs to keep normal methylation running. ReAline® supplies nutrients in their active, methylated forms.

What is one carbon metabolism?

Methyl metabolism is the set of linked reactions, driven by folate, B12, B2, B6, and methionine, that flood single methyl groups throughout the body. These nutrients supply the methyl groups used in DNA methylation, the same biochemistry the epigenetic clocks read. Homocysteine is a marker that tends to rise when the pathway runs short of methyl groups.

Why does magnesium matter for methylation?

The enzymes that run methylation need magnesium to work, which is why Dr. Dean says methylation is ruled by magnesium. In the Maui ReSet Bundle, ReMag® and ReMyte® supply magnesium and trace minerals so the B vitamins in ReAline® can work in concert rather than alone.

Will B vitamins lower my biological age?

We cannot make the claim that supplements can reverse aging or change a biological age test on their own. ReAline® supports the normal structure and function of your methylation pathways. The goal is nutrient sufficiency and a healthier pace of aging over time.
