From the Desk of Carolyn Dean MD ND

My latest book, Exposing Sugar Toxicity is now available on Amazon Kindle (for a mere $0.99) and in it I share extensive information about one of my top topics, yeast overgrowth, a condition which I know may affect about 80% of the population. I’ve drawn your attention to yeast overgrowth in my books, blogs and podcasts but I’m highlighting it for you again because allopathic medicine continues to ignore it as a disease entity.

What surprised me as I was researching this book is that most sugar authors who are doing their best to advance information about the dangers of sugar also overlook the fact that sugar and yeast overgrowth are inextricably connected.

In my decades of experience researching and writing and talking to people about this topic, yeast overgrowth remains a fundamental health challenge, alongside massive mineral deficiency. I’m curious what Dr. Google has to say about yeast overgrowth because this will give you an idea about why this ignored illness is at epidemic proportions.

What Dr. Google or an MD might say about yeast overgrowth

Dr. Google, which has the whole internet to scan for information, simply says that yeast overgrowth occurs when normally occurring candida yeast multiplies excessively, leading to an infection. It can occur when antibiotics have killed off the beneficial bacteria which normally keeps yeast populations in check. Diabetes and a weakened immune system are other factors that can affect yeast overgrowth.

Discussion about symptoms associated with yeast overgrowth is largely limited to vaginal yeast infections or red, itchy skin rashes, in moist areas of the body, (think groin, armpits, and underneath hanging breasts) that are typically treated with antifungal medication, either orally or topically. Some people may have digestive issues like indigestion, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, or oral thrush as a result of yeast overgrowth.

The idea of yeast overgrowth syndrome is bluntly invalidated online, with the dismissive claim that there is there is little scientific evidence to support the idea of yeast overgrowth syndrome or Candida syndrome. With regards to treatment, any dietary cleanses claiming to treat yeast overgrowth syndrome by eliminating sugar and white flour might lead to people feeling slightly better, but it’s proclaimed that there is no evidence that diet affects yeast overgrowth.

What I say about yeast overgrowth

The first point is that an online search about this topic completely ignores the kind of yeast overgrowth that I’ve been talking about for decades: intestinal yeast overgrowth which I believe to be at the root of the epidemic of chronic inflammation. While it is at the root of chronic yeast vaginitis, intestinal yeast overgrowth has far-reaching toxic repercussions throughout the body.

Let’s look at it through the lens of chronic inflammation, which is a condition that baffles allopathic medicine. Natural medicine practitioners see evidence that widespread toxicity in the body is at the root of inflammation and detoxifying the body is a move in the direction of soothing the inflammation. But first – what’s creating this toxic environment in the body.

We injure our bodies with too much sugar, too many simple carbohydrates, too much alcohol, too much calcium, and not enough magnesium – all known causes of inflammation. The yeast overload caused by antibiotics, birth control pills, sugar, and alcohol weakens the immune system and sets us up for chronic colds and flus that are treated with more antibiotics. We are exposed to an enormous number of infectious organisms every day.

Further injury and inflammation occur because daily we are exposed to about 60,000 commercially used, mostly untested, chemicals in our environment. This toxic swamp is a perfect breeding ground for thread-like invasive form of yeast organisms that are stealth invaders that overwhelm our defenses from the inside, exponentially adding to our toxic load.

I know this is harsh sounding, particularly in light of Dr. Google’s and the medical establishment’s complete dismissal of the dangers of yeast overgrowth but I need to get your attention.

Yeast is a naturally occurring fungus

Yeast, also known as Candida albicans, is a fungus that lives naturally in the human body, mostly in our mouth, digestive tract (mostly large intestine), vagina, and skin. As I mentioned above, it thrives in the mucus membranes or areas of moist skin – groin, armpits, and underneath large breasts.

Women are certainly familiar with vaginal yeast infections and men may experience jock itch, but for most people that’s the extent of their knowledge about yeast. What your doctor doesn’t tell you is that the yeast infection is just one of the ways that your body is expressing its tendency toward having yeast overgrowth. But how did that happen?

Causes of Candida

The candidates for creating Candida overgrowth alter our intestinal environment by killing protective bacteria, creating an acidic pH, and allowing the buildup of toxins. Antibiotics and sugar are the top contributors to yeast overgrowth and these, combined with the other nine factors contribute to what I call “The Downward Spiral” of dozens of illnesses and conditions that plague humans today, which you can see in detail in my book. Here’s what I know causes Candida:

  1. Antibiotics
  2. Diets high in sugar, carbs, yeast and yeast products, moldy foods and fermented foods
  3. Alcohol
  4. Steroid hormones and stress
  5. Mercury in dental fillings or vaccines containing mercury (thiomersal)
  6. Birth control pills
  7. Immunosuppressant drugs
  8. Pregnancy
  9. Exposure to molds at home or work from untreated water damage
  10. Chlorine in drinking water, shower and bath water, and swimming pools
  11. Fluoride in drinking water, toothpaste, dental treatments, and drugs

While our ancestors lived amicably with yeast, in the last 70 years, with the widespread use of refined sugar and antibiotics, that yeast has crossed the line and become the enemy. Antibiotics kill good bacteria and overuse of sugar feeds the yeast that has outlived the good bacteria.

Not only is yeast overgrowth a prime source of chronic inflammation in the body, but it can also cause or aggravate most health conditions which are treated with drugs that further support yeast overgrowth.

I urge you to take a giant step in the direction of supporting your health and research my extensive work on yeast overgrowth and see if it might be an underlying reason for some of your health challenges.
