Steven’s six months were hard. The science of nutrition and synergy

Metabolic flexibility rests on mineral sufficiency. Magnesium is a required cofactor in insulin signaling and in the enzymes that handle glucose. In pooled clinical trials, magnesium supplementation improved fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity markers in people with or at risk of diabetes, and a separate trial found that magnesium improved insulin sensitivity even in non-diabetic, normal magnesium adults. Magnesium deficiency is a well-known risk factor for prediabetes and diabetes as described in medical texts. When the body reads and uses glucose well, and has magnesium to assist, it can switch to stored fat and ketones more cleanly when food is scarce.

Trace minerals add to the picture. In adults with impaired glucose tolerance, supplementing chromium with magnesium improved glucose and insulin measures more than either mineral alone.
