What the “Gut Health Era” on TikTok Isn’t Telling You About Minerals
The microbiome trend is right about some things—and silent about the one thing that may be disrupting the balance
Currently, there seems to be a new wave of people seeking to optimize their gut microbiome. You’re counting fiber, adding fermented foods, comparing probiotic labels, sending stool samples to microbiome-testing labs, and following social-media creators who promise that the right combination of foods will transform everything from digestion to energy and mood.
And honestly, I’m glad we’re having this conversation. Some of the current hype about gut health is pointing in the right direction.
Your gut matters. The microorganisms living there interact constantly with your digestion, immune system, metabolism, and nervous system. What you eat influences that microbial environment, and the condition of that environment can influence how you feel.
However, I think we’re missing an important piece of the conversation about gut health and minerals.
We can spend hours talking about feeding the “good” bacteria, but we also need to ask what happens when another organism—yeast—gets out of balance.
In my decades of experience, gut health is never as simple as adding another probiotic or maximizing your fiber intake. Sometimes, before you can rebuild a healthy intestinal environment, you have to understand what may be disrupting it in the first place.
That’s where yeast enters the conversation.
What the “Gut Health Era” Gets Right
Today’s gut-health movement has more people thinking about their digestive health. This is a good thing.
A new wave of people is learning that the bacteria living in your digestive tract are not passive passengers. Instead, your microbiome is part of a complex ecosystem that interacts with digestion, immune function, metabolism, and communication between the gut and brain.
That makes the current interest in fiber, fermented foods, and microbial diversity encouraging.
People are finally asking questions that practitioners have been asking for years: What are we feeding our gut bacteria? What happens when we disrupt them? How does our intestinal environment affect the rest of the body?
Those are good questions.
However, the problem begins when gut health becomes another optimization project in which the answer is always more: more fiber, more fermented foods, more probiotics, more testing, more supplements.
Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another thing to add. Instead, it’s understanding what’s already happening in the gut and what may need to be removed, or at least reduced.
One of the areas I believe deserves considerably more attention is yeast.
The Piece Almost No Gut-Health Creator Mentions: Yeast Overgrowth
In Flora ReVive: ReSet Your Gut, I’ve discussed how easily yeast can be overlooked when people are trying to understand persistent digestive problems.
It’s tempting to investigate everything from genetics and hormones to microbiome testing. Of course, those investigations might provide useful information.
But if yeast overgrowth isn’t considered, a crucial part of the picture may be missed.
Here’s the basic idea: yeast can normally exist in the digestive tract without causing a problem. The issue is what happens when the intestinal environment changes.
For example, antibiotics change the intestinal environment because they can disrupt—or kill off—populations of beneficial bacteria along with the harmful bacteria they’re intended to target.
Likewise, a high-sugar, high-carbohydrate diet can create an environment that favors yeast. Under certain conditions, yeast may shift from its relatively quiet budding form toward a more invasive, thread-like form.
That’s the distinction I explore in ReSet the Yeast Connection.
Therefore, the question isn’t simply, “Do I have yeast?” Yeast can be part of a normal microbial environment. The more useful question is whether your intestinal environment is supporting a healthy balance.
That distinction matters because digestive symptoms aren’t automatically proof of yeast overgrowth. Likewise, yeast isn’t automatically the explanation for every gut problem.
However, when someone has been working on their gut health without seeing the results they expected, it’s a piece of the picture worth considering.
Leaky Tight Junctions: The Other Half of the Story
There’s another explanation for intestinal barrier problems that deserves a place in this conversation.
Dr. Zach Bush’s work, which I’ve discussed in Flora ReVive: ReSet Your Gut, focuses on the intestinal barrier and the structures known as tight junctions. These microscopic structures sit between intestinal cells and help regulate what passes through the intestinal lining.
Dr. Bush has investigated the potential effects of environmental exposures, including glyphosate residues, on these junctions. His work represents one perspective on why the integrity of the intestinal barrier may become compromised.
I don’t see this and yeast overgrowth as mutually exclusive explanations. In fact, I think it’s more useful to consider how multiple stresses may affect the same system.
Imagine your intestinal lining as a wall. One stressor may weaken the mortar between the bricks, while another places additional pressure on the wall itself.
As a result, you don’t necessarily have to choose one explanation over the other. An intestinal environment can be influenced by microbial balance, diet, medications, environmental exposures, stress, and many other factors at the same time—even bowel movement frequency!
That’s why I prefer looking at the whole terrain rather than searching for one villain.
And this is also where gut health and minerals belong in the conversation. Your intestinal cells, like every other cell in your body, require nutrients to maintain normal structure and function.
After all, the microbiome doesn’t exist separately from the person carrying it.
Where Did Our Microbiome Originate?
Here’s a question that rarely appears on your TikTok feed: Where did humans get their microbes before we had probiotic capsules?
For most of human history, our relationship with microorganisms was much more intimate than it is today. We lived outdoors, handled soil, ate foods grown directly from the earth, and ate fermented foods because refrigeration didn’t exist. We also lived alongside animals and weren’t constantly sterilizing every surface we touched.
I’m not suggesting that we should abandon modern hygiene.
Clean water, sanitation, and appropriate hygiene have transformed human health. There is an enormous difference between protecting ourselves from dangerous pathogens and eliminating every possible encounter with microorganisms.
However, the soil itself contains an extraordinary microbial community, and plants interact with that community as they grow.
Humans historically encountered microorganisms through food, soil, animals, and the environment in ways that are much less common today.
Meanwhile, our relationship with that environment has changed dramatically. We spend far more time indoors, eat more processed foods, and obtain much of our food through systems that separate us from the soil where it originated.
I wouldn’t reduce every modern gut problem to “not enough dirt,” and the science surrounding soil exposure and microbiome health is still developing.
Even so, I think microbial diversity deserves a bigger conversation than simply choosing another capsule from the supplement aisle.
The Antibiotics Domino Effect
This is where the story becomes particularly practical because most of us have some experience with antibiotics.
Sometimes antibiotics are absolutely appropriate and necessary. However, they can also alter the microbial community in the gut as they do their job.
Research discussed by Dr. Melissa Lee Phillips and cited in my work describes changes in gut bacteria following antibiotic exposure. These include reductions in beneficial bacterial populations and changes that can allow yeast populations to increase.
Consequently, this creates the possibility of a domino effect: antibiotics alter the bacterial balance, the altered environment may favor yeast, and under certain conditions yeast can change its form and behavior.
In ReSet the Yeast Connection, I discuss the shift from the normal budding form toward a more invasive, thread-like mycelial form. This is one reason I believe antibiotic history can be an important part of the conversation when someone is struggling with persistent digestive symptoms.
Of course, this doesn’t mean every person who has taken an antibiotic has a yeast problem. Nor does it mean that bloating, irregularity, fatigue, or other digestive complaints automatically indicate yeast overgrowth.
It simply means that the history of your gut matters.
If you’ve repeatedly tried to improve your gut health without asking what may be disrupting the environment in the first place, that’s a conversation worth having with a qualified healthcare professional.
Rebuilding: A Protocol the Trend Doesn’t Cover
Once you’ve considered what might be disturbing the balance, the next question is naturally: How do we rebuild?
This is where I take a different approach from the “one probiotic and you’re done” philosophy.
Rebuilding the gut can take time, particularly when you’ve spent years creating an environment that isn’t especially friendly to microbial balance.

Don’t Forget the Connection Between Gut Health and Minerals
There’s one more piece I don’t want lost in the microbiome conversation: minerals.
The gut is responsible for absorbing many of the nutrients your body needs. However, that doesn’t mean the gut operates independently of those nutrients.
Magnesium, zinc, selenium, and other minerals participate in countless cellular processes throughout the body, including processes involved in normal digestive and immune function. In addition, they are responsible for helping to make the structure of the gut wall.
And we can’t forget Vitamin C, which is necessary in the production of collagen that is also part of the gut wall structure.
That’s why I don’t think of gut health as simply a probiotic problem.
I think of it as a terrain problem.
Questions to Ask About Your Individual Terrain
Here are some questions to ask yourself about your individual terrain:
- What are you eating?
- What are you feeding your microbes?
- How much sugar are you consuming?
- Have medications, especially antibiotics, altered your microbial environment?
- Are you getting enough nutrient-dense foods?
- Have you considered yeast overgrowth?
- Are you providing your cells with the minerals they need for their everyday work?
You can take the most sophisticated microbiome test available, but a list of bacteria doesn’t tell the entire story of the environment those bacteria are living in.
Instead, the microbial community, the intestinal lining, your diet, your nutrient status, and your lifestyle are all part of the same ecosystem.
Ultimately, that’s why gut health and minerals should be part of the same conversation.
