From the Desk of Carolyn Dean MD ND

I’m writing this blog as a public service to young men who have found themselves with symptoms like strange rashes, itching, painful intercourse, dry skin, indigestion, craving beer, intestinal gas, and even impotence. If you have any (or all) of these symptoms, you may be harboring an overgrowth of yeast that has the ability to severely interfere with your physical health and wellbeing. Please review this important information and share it with young men who need to hear how to protect and clear themselves from this potentially invasive species of fungus. It’s not just about jock itch anymore.

What Dr. Google or an MD might say about yeast overgrowth in young men

At a glance, Dr. Google tells you that male yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the yeast candida which naturally resides on the skin and mucus membranes. It’s fed and aggravated by a moist environment and its overgrowth is typically results from having vaginal or oral sex with a partner who has a yeast infection, and it mainly manifests in an inflamed, red penis tip.

Men who are overweight, not circumcised, practice poor hygiene, or those who overuse antibiotics may be more susceptible to local penile yeast infections.

Dr. Google says that jock itch and yeast infections are not the same thing, but they can occur simultaneously. Jock itch is a fungal infection while yeast infections are from the candida yeast.

Symptoms associated with yeast overgrowth in young men

Dr. Google limits its general discussion of male yeast overgrowth to penile yeast infection. Keep reading to learn how male yeast problems aren’t just about your penis.

The symptoms that Google AI talks about:

  • Itching, burning, redness on tip of penis
  • Swelling around penis and foreskin
  • Sores, blisters, white patches on penis
  • Cheesy-looking white discharge
  • Burning upon urination
  • Pain, tenderness, cracking of skin

While yeast infection in men is not considered to be an STI (sexually transmitted infection), it can have similarities to STIs and it can be transmitted through sexual contact.

Dr. Google might … I mean, Will, suggest drugs

Antifungal creams are available over the counter or by prescription and include miconazole (Monistat, Cruex, Desenex), clotrimazole (Lotrimin AF, Canesten, Mycelex), and nystatin (Mycostatin).

You may also be prescribed an oral antifungal to increase the strength of the treatment.

Dr. Google also suggests proper personal hygiene and condom usage to prevent spreading a yeast infection during sex. There is a mention of monitoring and managing blood sugar levels to possibly prevent and treat yeast infections.

What I say about yeast overgrowth in young men

Yeast overgrowth caused by Candida albicans is a very common condition that is not recognized by allopathic medicine. When it overgrows, it can contribute to IBS, leaky gut, and even colitis. It can also cause oral thrush, groin rash, or penile rash. It’s not just about your penis. Men usually don’t see a doctor about their yeast symptoms, or if they do, they are routinely misdiagnosed. As a result, yeast infections are often passed back and forth between infected partners.

The yeast, Candida albicans, normally lives in the lower gastrointestinal tract, where it functions to metabolize undigested food that reaches the large intestine. However, taking antibiotics kills off good and bad bacteria, allowing yeast to fill in the gap. A diet high in sugar and simple carbohydrates feeds the marauding yeast, which can then grow into the small intestine. When the yeast travels into the small intestine looking for more food, it punctures holes in the intestinal lining, creating a condition known as “leaky gut”.

Antibiotics, cortisone, stress, alcohol, and a highly refined bread-and-sugar diet will cause Yeast Overgrowth in both men and women.

Yeast Overgrowth creates toxins in your system

When the sugar you eat is digested by yeast, it produces acetaldehyde, which is such a potent toxin that it can damage every tissue in the body, including the brain! Acetaldehyde damages the structure of red blood cells, making them unable to squeeze through tiny capillaries to bring oxygen to all parts of the body. For more information about the effects of Yeast Overgrowth on your system, please read my book, Total Body ReSet for Men.

Don’t blame your partner for your yeast problem.

If you have a problem with yeast overgrowth, it’s because you’ve spent months or years creating an environment where yeast will thrive. If you’ve been “infected” by someone with a vaginal or oral yeast infection, it’s simply a sign that your system is moving into another stage of your own yeast problem.

What to do if you suspect you have a problem with Yeast Overgrowth?

Please read my Yeast ReSet Diet and protocol in my book, ReSet The Yeast Connection. In the meantime, here’s an overview of what to do to begin reversing your Yeast Overgrowth problem.

  • Avoid sugar, gluten and dairy
  • Add green, non-starchy vegetables to each meal
  • Experiment with fermented foods
  • Eat anti-fungal foods like garlic, onion, lemon, lime, daikon, cayenne

Yeast treatment will be long-term project, but it doesn’t have to be that demanding. An effective yeast protocol includes diet, probiotics, and natural antifungals. But you don’t have to be terribly strict with your diet if you take my natural antifungal every day. And, if you need to take an antibiotic, or if you go on vacation or have a food binge and eat and drink yourself into yeast overgrowth, you just repeat the whole protocol. You are finally in charge of your yeast.
