Dr Dean Diaries
The first year in Maui we were still expecting a move to a Costa Rica retirement community that was in the planning stages. But, happily, the whole project fell through with the 2008 economic crash. I say happily because staying in the U.S. and not having to negotiate a business in a foreign country probably saved us a lot of headaches. And, as it turns out, Maui was the best thing that ever happened to me. This Diary Series is based on my 50+ years of doing and saying that we just need people to eat right and take the right supplements, and I proved that with the 2026 Maui ReSet Study.
Here we were in the Kihei/Wailea/Makena area, a 15-minute walk to the beach with an hour walk along the hotel beach path ending with a swim in the ocean alongside sea turtles as big as I am!
From Future Health Now to ReMag®
I was busy with telephone consultations, selling my books, and writing an online wellness program called Future Health Now. It had 108 modules offering all the biohacking you can imagine to people eager for lifestyle advice they could implement. But when the 2008 crash happened, I had members tell me they had to go back to work and didn’t even have time to read my modules. They asked me to just tell them what supplements to take to allow them to cope with all their newfound stress and stay healthy. That’s what natural health advice amounted to – what supplements to take.
I realized, I really didn’t know what supplements to recommend. I had explored the world of dietary supplements back in New York when I realized the homeopathic, acupuncture point injections would not be readily accepted by physicians. The protocol worked extremely well but because it involved injections, which needed to be administered by a doctor or a nurse, this made the treatment extremely costly. So, I explored encapsulating the Chinese herbs that made up the formulas. Boy, did I get my mind blown.
I approached the biggest supplement manufacturer on the East Coast. It was Douglas Labs and I’m telling you their name since they were bought out by Nestle about ten years ago so I have no loyalty to them. I asked what they would do if the herbs from China arrived contaminated? Would they refuse shipment and send them back? I thought that would be the protocol. Nope. I was told that contamination was no problem, that there are lots of ways to remove contaminants from herbs, so they would pass the quality control testing the FDA requires. Oh, I said, what processes are used? I was told that they could do all of the following and none of it had to be declared on the supplement label:
- Controlled drying (heat, vacuum), steam sterilization,
- gamma irradiation,
- chemical treatments,
- high hydrostatic pressure,
- high-temperature short-time (HTST) processing
- ethylene oxide gas with heat.
I know that list seems like overkill, but I want people to know what is happening to their “precious” herbal capsules. Not so “precious” after all!
When you spend your whole life thinking that plants are “living” entities – I couldn’t imagine any “life” would remain after steaming and irradiating and gassing with ethylene oxide. On that phone call, I realized I was not going to be selling herbal supplements. But I kept talking. I wanted to know how they could ensure the herbs would not be contaminated with herbicides and pesticides. They said the only way to do that was to know the grower and demand strict organic practices. Since it would be impossible to meet that requirement, it just confirmed that I would not be reproducing the AIDS work I had done with the MIHR injectables.
Back to my wonderful Future Health Now program, which was now in jeopardy because people just didn’t have the time to read it or implement it, and they were asking me to recommend supplements. And, I still hadn’t found the perfect, non-laxative magnesium. That finally came in 2012 when I stumbled upon a chemist who was working on a process to stabilize magnesium ions. We spoke and I encouraged him to push his process to create a high concentration of magnesium, and ReMag® was born. I won’t say much more because the intricate 18-step process is proprietary, which means it’s unique and can never be copied.
Growing Oko’a Farms and the ParaGenius Foundation
In Diary Blogs 6 and 7, I wrote about my experience with CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), but I haven’t mentioned growing up with backyard vegetable gardens and front yard flowers. In various places we lived, I tried to grow vegetables, but I never had the time or patience or good enough soil to make it work. When we moved to Maui, I was surprised that there were not more farmer’s markets and organic produce.
In Diary Blog 7, I talked about 9/11 and Food Security in Canada and now living in Maui I became conscious of how dependent we are on mainland for our food supply. Sadly, up to 90% of our food supply comes by barge from the mainland. Think of how green the fruit has to be to survive the many days at sea, and how wilted the vegetables, and how expensive the perishables that have to come by air freight. Expensive, unhealthy, and unsustainable, and not organic. Yes, you can double the cost for organic produce. I was determined to make a dent in that world; I had to do something about it.
In Maui, I also observed that much of Maui’s low-lying farmland had historically been devoted to sugarcane production, grown with heavy pesticide use and plastic sheeting to control weeds, and harvested by burning the crop right along with the plastic covering! Although there was a big movement in Maui to halt the sugar cane burning, the company claimed there were no ill effects – but there were.
In the pool, in my complex, after a day of sugarcane-burning, we would wake up to find the surface covered in black ash. Think of how much soot we were all inhaling. This method of sugarcane farming was finally curtailed in 2016 due to production costs and a declining market, not for health reasons.
In 2018, a Canadian company, who call themselves Maui Pono, bought 56,000 acres of sugarcane land and watershed for a mere $262 million. They became the largest landowner in Maui. But they don’t disclose the level of soil toxicity of the land. They just started farming monocrops, which are shipped back to the mainland!
In the first year or so of living in Maui, 2009-2010, I asked a holistic dentist if he knew of an organic farm where I could get good produce. He told me about Ryan Earehart of Oko’a Farms, who actually delivered produce. So, I signed up! After getting a few deliveries, I asked Ryan how I could help his farm financially. Ryan didn’t seem to believe that I wanted to lend a hand, but one week when he said he was having trouble getting a loan for an $80,000 Italian tractor, my ears perked up.
This tractor has a swivel cab so that on the hilly farmland, the tractor at the top of the hill can simply swivel the cab and come back down. Tractor tipping can kill a farmer. I helped with that purchase and a second tractor, then I started lending large sums to get a farm storefront. Before we moved into the store, Ryan and his staff were selling produce at 4 – 5 outdoor markets per week. I and friends volunteered at the UpCountry Farmer’s market every Saturday morning in Kula. We did it rain or shine and through the whole Covid lockdown – we never missed a day. When we had to, we wore masks, we did the silly 6-foot spacing, we even wore plastic gloves for a few weeks, but we kept feeding people.
Imagine, getting up at 3am, loading the van, driving to the market location, setting up in the dark and after only a few hours, breaking down the display and driving home to then work the fields. It’s a brutal life that’s not properly supported by banks or the government. And it produces the very food we need to live and breathe – it’s incredible that faming is so disrespected. Part of that is a planned effort to make meat in labs and force us to eat insects.
Our first farm store opened in August 2023 in Kula in a shopping center complex adjacent to the Saturday Farmer’s Market. It opened just before the horrific Maui Wildfires that destroyed Lahaina. The very next day, we loaded up our refrigerated truck with tons of food and took it to an outdoor kitchen that was erected by one of our customers whose restaurant had burned to the ground. We continued doing that for months transporting a total of about 20 tons of food until people were housed.
July 4, 2026, we had a grand opening of a second farm store in Wailea to serve an area where the nearest grocery store is 5 miles away. The Wailea Village is a small community with a few dozen shops and restaurants where we have a Tuesday morning Farmer’s Market. Our store is in the Village and it’s open 7 days a week. At the end of my morning beach walk, I stop in at the store to help out and revel in the air conditioning and the sheer beauty of the produce and goods that we sell.
To further support the farm, in 2023, I created the ParaGenius Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to building a healthy, resilient community through support of agriculture and food education. On our www.ParaGenius.org website we display the following mandate:
Together, with ‘Oko’a Farms we expand access to organic fruits and vegetables through local storefronts and help over 200 local producers gain visibility and opportunity.
Our most rewarding project is bringing school children to the farm for educational farm tours and farm experience. Since our founding in 2023, we have worked to deliver relief to local farmers by raising critical funds and securing grants to advance our programs and reach those most in need. Our 2026 project is providing farm produce to seniors with ParaGenius as a supporting partner. Here is the official announcement: “The County of Maui Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the County Department of Human Concerns and Kula-based Okoʻa Farms, will launch the Locally Grown Healthy Food for Kūpuna Program this September to expand access to healthy, fresh, locally sourced foods at senior congregate dining sites on Maui.” You can read the whole article here: https://mauinow.com/2026/08/26/new-6-month-pilot-program-to-provide-fresh-farm-produce-to-maui-kupuna/
The Radish Experiment
I talked about how I was given the formula for what became our RnA ReSet Drops® in Diary Blog 2. Even if people don’t take the RnA ReSet Drops® directly, they are getting the dehydrated version in most of our capsules and powders. The Drops are made in a rotating drum that stands eight feet high, six feet deep, and five feet wide. It holds 500 pounds of barley seeds. After a few days of rotation while being sprayed with water and a proprietary formula – “Voilà” – we have our RnA ReSet Drops®.
Now it’s time to tell you how awesome they are. The anecdotes started a soon as our factory started making the drops: people started feeling energetic and happy without even taking the drops; the cleaners said, there was less cleaning required in the building; plants in the building were getting healthier. Then when we started taking them, there were all kinds of reports of what people tasted. I tasted cigarettes – my father was a smoker and I think I was detoxing cigarettes. Other people tasted Doritos, lemonade, and bologna! Then people started putting the dregs of their bottles on their plants – instead of letting the last drops be washed down the drain, they filled up the 2 oz bottle with water and put it on their plants.
We saved everything from the production of the drops including the remains of the sprouted barley seeds. It was like barley straw when it dried out and we started using it as fertilizer. That gave me an idea. Since we couldn’t afford the huge cost of doing an RnA ReSet Drops® study, in May 2018, I invited Houston, a young worked from the warehouse to come to Maui to do The Radish Experiment.
Houston alongside Sal the co-owner of Oko’a Farms, measured out 2 garden plots and planted radish seeds. One plot was treated with our barley straw, which we called Mighty Mash®. The other plot had nothing done to it. Also, a ‘tea’ made of Mighty Mash® and water was sprayed on the test plot every 2-3 days. Radishes were chosen because they grow FAST. At the end of 26 days, we harvested 83 pounds of beautiful bright red, round, healthy radishes from the test plot and only 3 pounds from the control plot. The control plot radishes were wormy and stunted. Also, the control plot had a lot of weeds whereas the test plot was fairly clear of weeds.
Here’s what I figured was happening. The barley straw was inoculating the soil with something alive and that life force was transmitted to the plants making them robust and immune to predators! Predators will go after the vulnerable in a herd of animals or a field of crops. The RnA ReSet Drops® and their “barley straw, waste product” are prebiotic, probiotic life enhancing nutrients. Since I want everyone to have this benefit and we can’t “advertise” that the drops are a “life force” nutrient, I decided to put dehydrated RnA ReSet Drops® powder in all our pill and powder formulas! You are experiencing the RnA ReSet Drops® when you take D3K2® (vegan friendly D3 and K2 from natto) Whole C ReSet® (food-based vitamin C), ReStructure® (whey, pea, rice protein powder) and our delicious berry flavored Vitamin C ReSet Powder® (generous portions of vitamin C and potassium in a berry flavored drink mix) and Flora Revive® (soil-based probiotic formula that supports gut health, digestive balance).
Actually, it’s time I talked about my 2012 entry into the Dietary Supplement Business – I’ll do that in the next blog.
